There is a growing controversy over the guest list for the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, scheduled for January 22, 2024. The event has become a political focal point ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Invitations have been extended to religious leaders, actors, and politicians, but it remains uncertain who from the opposition parties will attend.

Sharad Pawar, the Chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), expressed disappointment at not receiving an invitation to the ceremony, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, and other dignitaries are expected to be present. Pawar stated that attending religious events is a personal choice for him and criticized the BJP, suggesting they might be engaging in politics or business in the name of the Ram temple. The situation adds a political dimension to the much-anticipated inauguration.

Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, revealed that he has not been invited to the Ayodhya Ram temple inauguration event on January 22. Tharoor emphasized that religion is a personal attribute and should not be politically exploited. He expressed his views on the matter through a post on social media.

CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat voiced her party’s decision to abstain from the event, denouncing it as the “politicization of a religious program.” Karat emphasized the importance of respecting religious beliefs but criticized the linking of the religious event with politics.

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal echoed similar sentiments, stating that he did not feel the need to attend the ceremony as he carries “Lord Ram in his heart.” Sibal emphasized that his focus lies on matters such as unemployment, inflation, public welfare, and national security rather than religious events.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust extended invitations to Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, as well as former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and H D Deve Gowda. However, sources suggested that senior Congress leaders are unlikely to attend.

The Trust has sent invitations to various eminent personalities from different domains, including revered saints, politicians, cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, business tycoons like Amitabh Bachchan, Mukesh Ambani, and Gautam Adani, as well as actors associated with the legendary TV series Ramayan, Arun Govil and Dipika Chikhlia. The guest list also includes RSS Head Mohan Bhagwat, Baba Ramdev, and Ratan Tata.

The inauguration ceremony is expected to witness the participation of about 4,000 saints from different sects, along with judges, scientists, writers, poets, Shankaracharyas, religious leaders, former civil servants, retired Army officers, lawyers, musicians, and recipients of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards. The event holds significance as it follows a long legal battle, culminating in the Supreme Court’s 2019 verdict paving the way for the construction of the Ram Temple.
